In 2008, with a Cultural Envoy Program grant from the U.S. State Department, I spent 2 months in Kolkata, India, creating a performance with undergraduate and graduate students in the Rabindra Bharati University, which hosts the major drama department in Eastern India. From among 85 students who auditioned over a period of 4 days, I chose 25 to enter an extended workshop process which culminated in an original performance. The slides represent a part of the workshop process, working with improvised movement in relation to space, shape and relationship. The film clips are from one of the performances of “JHUKI” (“RISK”), an original production based on personal stories of the actors which movement and dialogue coming out of the workshop process. |
